I simply don’t know how the Lib Dems are going to escape from the deep pit into which they have fallen.

Former leader, Ming Campbell, says his credibility would be “shot to pieces” if he supports the new line laid down by Nick Clegg and Vince Cable.

Charles Kennedy is in open revolt. He has been waiting for this moment.

The Lib Dem manifesto could not be clearer:

“We will scrap unfair university tuition fees so everyone has the chance to get a degree, regardless of their parents’ income.”

In the introduction, Nick Clegg warns voters not to settle for “low politics and broken promises…”

Hmmmm.

If the Lib Dems can casually throw their election promises overboard a few months after an election, where on earth does that leave the voters?

And, perhaps more importantly, where does it leave Lib Dem Party members? Apart from looking very foolish.

They have been banging on for years about scrapping tuition fees.

Over the years, the Lib Dems have carefully cultivated the impression that their “grass roots” have a major say on key policy positions. Bottom up and all that. Not top down.

This has all been shot to pieces.

Along with their credibility.
